Mt. Hood Community College in Portland is supposed to have a good program. Portland is a pretty cheap city to live in. Look at their program online.

Re: mortuary science school
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 11:25 AMI am an apprentice embalmer in Northern Cali. There are two schools in California to go to. I went to Cypress College of Mortuary Science in Orange County California. The program was originally located in LA (1920's - 1970's) then moved to Cypress. They have an excellent staff and great prep room facilities. You can look up Cypress Community College on the net. The newest one (which replace the San Francisco College) is located in Sacramento (Sucto). It is called American River College. Those are the only two. I would recommend Cypress. What is nice is that they are C.C. so it's not that expensive. For more information of the industry you can also go to www.dca.ca.gov or www.cafda.com. If you have any other questions about the field or other I'd be more that happy to answer them. Hope all is well.

Re: mortuary science school
Wed, September 7, 2005 - 3:43 PMYour son will be in for alot. The classes range from anatomy to restorative art; death & dying to grief couseling. I had a great time at my college. I still love my work. The best thing about my job is when there is a viewing and they say "my mom/dad looked so peaceful or beutiful" and I know they have had the opportunity to pay their respects and start a healthy grieving process knowing that their loved one is at peace. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Re: mortuary science school
Mon, January 16, 2006 - 2:10 PMThere are two Mort Sci Colleges in Cali.
#1: Cypress College School of Mortuary Science (CC), in Cypress, CA (Orange County.... near Disneyland!)
#2: American River College of Mortuary Science (CC), in Sacramento, CA (Our beloved capital)
The college in San Francisco closed down about 2 years ago. Both of these colleges are Community Colleges so they will be much more affordable than San Francisco was. I think with books, tuition and supplies it was about $2500 to go to Cypress.... I highly recommend Cypress College. -
